Leonard Cohen’s First U.S. tour in 15 Years Coming to Chicago

Leonard Cohen kicked off his first American tour in 15 years at New York City’s Beacon Theatre last night, and, not surprisingly, the scene before the show was “incongruously manic.” After all, the 74-year-old Cohen is one of the most beloved singer-songwriters of the modern era, and not just because everybody and their mother is covering “Hallelujah” these days. His absence from the stage has only made Cohen more beloved, and even if it took a major financial crisis to get him back on the road, fans no doubt will be lining up to see him on his current tour, which comes to the Windy City  May 5 for a show at The Chicago Theatre.
Cohen performed for more than three hours last night, and pretty much blew everyone away. Our sister Decider site in New York was beaming afterward: “There were moments during the more hushed songs when Cohen himself seemed disembodied from what issued from his mouth—that soothing, chilling croak, highly mannered but penetrating in ways that are highly, divinely human. Cohen spent a lot of time singing on his knees, crouched down with his lanky shoulders drawn in and his hands holding the microphone with something like tranquil desperation; it wasn’t clear that Cohen even realized there were thousands of other people in the room with him … The whole show was a triumph for a kind of earned wisdom and slow, creeping staying-power that’s easy to forget the value of these days.”

RevCo Pre Order and Release Party/Benefit Update

ADIOS…PUTA MADRES…MINISTRY’S FINAL WORLD TOUR

Although Al Jourgensen has said adios to Ministry, YOU don’t ever have to really say good-bye to the legendary Industrial rock band, thanks to Jourgensen’s indie imprint 13th Planet Records. On March 31, 2009, Jourgensen will release “Adios…Puta Madres,” a 13-track live audio CD featuring performances from Ministry’s Final World Tour, “C U LaTouR 2008,” recorded over the course of the band’s 75-city global farewell jaunt which kicked off March 25, 2008 in Spokane, WA and concluded with two final sell-out shows in Dublin, Ireland on July 19, 2008. “Adios…Puta Madres” features performances recorded in Serbia, Warsaw, Los Angeles, Chicago, Germany, Czech Republic, and Slovakia, to name a few.

“We had a blast on the final tour and this CD really captures the heart of Ministry live,” said Jourgensen, who personally mixed the recordings last fall at 13th Planet Studios alongside his touring front-of-house engineer Michihiro Tanikawa, as well as engineer John Bilberry.

Ministry’s all-star line-up for the 2008 “C U LaTouR” featured Ministry’s founder Jourgensen joined onstage by guitarists Tommy Victor (Prong) and Sin Quirin (Revolting Cocks), keyboardist John Bechdel (Prong, AoTW, False Icons), Static X’s Tony Campos on bass, drummer AAron Rossi (Prong), and Fear Factory/Ascension of the Watchers vocalist Burton C. Bell as Special Featured Guest. Most of the performing musicians in the Ministry line-up for the final tour are also recording artists on Jourgensen’s 13th Planet Records.

Jourgensen plans to release a follow-up Rocumetary of the tour entitled “Fuchi Requiem” later this year, featuring candid footage that follows the band from rehearsals throughout the entirety of its C U LaTouR, with additional on-camera interviews with the band and crew.

Ministry gems including “Khyber Pass,” “Just One Fix,” the Grammy-nominated “Lieslieslies,” “Life is Good” and “Let’s Go” will be included. A full CD track listing is below.

SEVENTH VOID: Debut Album Release Date Announced

SEVENTH VOID, the new band formed by TYPE O NEGATIVE guitarist Kenny Hickey and drummer Johnny Kelly, will release its debut album on April 21 via Big Vin Records, the label formed by HELLYEAH/ex-PANTERA drummer Vinnie Paul Abbott. A CD-release party will be held at the Clubhouse, the Dallas nightclub founded by Vinnie Paul and his late brother, PANTERA guitarist “Dimebag” Darrell Abbott. “It’s an amazing record,” Vinnie recently said. “I mixed the whole thing for the guys. It goes somehere between SOUNDGARDEN meets BLACK SABBATH meets a little AUDIOSLAVE, with some TYPE O thrown in there. It’s really nice, dark, sludgy… Kenny’s vocals are great.”

Rounded out by bassist Hank Hell (INHUMAN) and guitarist Matt Brown (ex-SUPERMASSIV), SEVENTH VOID continues TYPE O’s tradition of slow, heavy riffs and existential lyrics, but with a slightly sludgier, “stonier” flavor.
