Wisconsin Beer Tax Poll

SOURCE: New Glarus Brewing Company

Wisconsin is considering raising our State beer tax from $2 to $10.00 a barrel. The Milwaukee paper is taking a poll asking people to vote on this proposal. Feel free to add a comment.

Some issues I have with this tax.

· Targets small brewers, taxing only those under 300,000 barrels. Miller, Leinie’ s and City Brewing are exempt creating an unfair price advantage for big brewers.

· Increases the price of a case of beer $1 to 1.50 at retail not cents a bottle as this bill’s creator states.

· Beer is a beverage of moderation, why not liquor and wine?

· Taxes Wisconsin produced beer but not beer brewed elsewhere and sold in Wisconsin. A good reason to brew even more Miller and Leinie’s in Ohio and bring it back tax free.

· Taxing Agricultural manufacturers during a recession is irresponsible. We should not be forced to pay taxes instead of creating jobs.

· The Federal Gov is proposing to reduce beer tax recognizing that we are a valuable part of the nation’s economy and we brewers have been hit with increasing health care, raw material and transportation costs.

· If we need money for health care– why not a Big Mac Tax to help with cancer, diabetes and heart attacks? Maybe it is time for real Health care reform.
New Glarus Brewing Company is proud to be Wisconsin owned, Wisconsin brewed and create Wisconsin jobs. Please pass this on.
Best Wishes,

XXXclusive, More pix from The Rum Diary Movie Site in San Juan

A  full blast of a rum-soaked, mad American in a tropical paradise.

Full of debauchery, Hunter S. Thompson’s second novel, The Rum Diary was initially ill-received. It was started in 1959, but was not published until 1998.

Following in the footsteps of the Beat Generation, Thompson’s rambling stream-of-consciousness writing style started and bloomed into one of his most recognizable books Fear and Loathing in Las Vegas.

The story opens with a wonderful description of reporter Paul Kemp in Al’s Backyard, the local hangout for the other reporters working at the San Juan Daily Times. It builds into the life of an American living in Puerto Rico, then an undiscovered paradise. We soon come to find out Puerto Rico isn’t as wonderful as we think; full of poverty and crime.

Kemp is quickly tangled in a web of conflicted love for a woman he sees on the plane. Adding trouble to the plot, the question of whether or not the newspaper will go under is a constant theme throughout the novel. The novel is then under impending doom, and is only curable with more rum.

Kemp’s relationship with everybody he meets is strictly professional, making them hard to like and easy to hate. Each character develops well into their own lost personalities, including Kemp’s, who originally comes to Puerto Rico to escape the dull life of New York and regular America.

Robert Rodriguez Eyeing June Start For ‘Machete’!

In addition to the news that Robert Rodriguez is going to direct 20th Century Fox’s reboot of the Predator franchise, it was also announced that the writer-director-producer is eyeing a June start date in Austin for Machete, a feature about the blade- wielding antihero who appeared in a mock trailer that was part of Grindhouse back on ‘07. The film is financed and produced by Overnight Productions, with Danny Trejo starring as the title character. An Ex-Federale named Machete is hired to assassinate a US Senator, but he is double-crossed. Left for dead, he comes back for vengeance with the help of his brother, a priest with a checkered background. Yesterday He Was A Decent Man Living A Decent Life. Now He Is A Brutal Savage Who Must Slaughter To Stay Alive. Rodriguez wrote the script and will direct the film with Ethan Maniquis, his longtime editor.

According to Mr. Trejo, not only is the first (and only?) Grindhouse spin-off movie still happening, but there’s been talk of a trilogy. Keeping in mind that the first pseudo-exploitation flick would go straight-to-DVD, three of them wouldn’t seem completely outside the realms of possibility/profitability.

UPDATED: More Photos On Rum Diary Set

We’ve got today some photos of Johnny Depp driving Fiat 500 on the set of “The Rum Diary.”

The movie directed by Bruce Robinson based on Hunter S. Thompson’s novel of the same name also stars Amber Heard, Aaron Eckhart, Richard Jenkins
and Michael Rispoli.

We’ll keep you posted weekely on updates of AZ’s favorite HST novel.

he Rum Diary is an early novel by American writer Hunter S. Thompson that was written in the early 1960s but was not published until 1998.

The story involves a journalist named Paul Kemp, who moves from New York to work for a small newspaper, The Daily News, in San Juan, Puerto Rico. Set in the late 1950s, the novel encompasses a tangled love story of jealousy, treachery and violent alcoholic lust among the American expatriates who staff the newspaper.

Thompson himself traveled from New York to San Juan in 1960 to write for an ill-fated sports newspaper on the island. Thompson had unsuccessfully applied to work at the larger English-language daily called the San Juan Star while novelist William J. Kennedy was the editor. While in Puerto Rico, Thompson befriended many of the writers at the Star, providing the context for The Rum Diary’s fictional storyline.

Although Thompson was only 22 when he wrote the story, it deals extensively with a fear of “going over the hill” and growing old. The prominent characters are typical of Thompson’s work; violent, maniacal and alcoholic, stumbling through life. It is written in a highly paced and rather exciting style, also typical of his work.

Thompson told PBS talk show host Charlie Rose in 1999 that he had given up the novel because it had originally “bounced about seven times - I got the standard list of rejection letters - and I came back from South America and I got into the politics of the 60s and 70s, and it was a full time job.” He then said that he revisited the book because “it’s got a romantic notion…that and money.. and I was faced with the fact of having to dig out my 40-year old story…I can’t change it, like, ‘ye gods, this is me, this is the world I lived in’…so I approached it as a writer…it’s a good story.”

It is Thompson’s second novel, preceded by the still-unpublished Prince Jellyfish.

New York Dolls Announce May US Tour Dates! - Legendary glam punk pioneers announce spring US Tour dates!

New York, NY: Legendary NYC proto-punk glam rockers the NEW YORK DOLLS announce the first dates of the US tour starting in May. The band that kick-started the NYC rock scene with their self-titled debut back in 1973 reunited with producer Todd Rundgren for their May 5 release, Cause I Sez So, on the newly revived Atco imprint.

The quintessential NYC band performs a private show on Tuesday, May 5 at the John Varvatos store on Bowery, the site of landmark punk club CBGBs.

While the Dolls have nothing left to prove, their live shows are a testament to why they remain one of the most influential, beloved rock bands of all time.  Founders David Johansen (vocals) and Sylvain Sylvain (guitar), the only surviving members of the original group, are joined by Steve Conte (guitar); Brian Delaney (drums); and Sami Yaffa (bass). With rave reviews for their 2009 performances at the SxSW festival and South America, the Dolls continue to prove that lipsticked or otherwise, they can still kick your ass.
