Alex Skolnick Trans Genre Guitar Hero

Alex Skolnick (born September 29, 1968, grew up in Berkeley, California) is an American jazz and metal guitarist. He is a member of the thrash metal band Testament from its formation in San Francisco in 1983 until his departure in 1992. He returned briefly to re-record some old material for the band’s First Strike is Still Deadly release as well as the “Thrash of the Titans” all-star performance in 2001. He joined the band Savatage for the recording of Handful of Rain, as well as its follow-up live album and home video release Japan Live ‘94. He has also recorded and briefly toured with the Stu Hamm band, and played with the Trans-Siberian Orchestra. In 2004, Skolnick made a guest appearance on Lamb of God’s Ashes of the Wake album. Alex recorded a solo for the instrumental track bearing the same name as the album.

After leaving Savatage, Skolnick fronted several projects in the Bay Area during the mid to late 1990s, such as Exhibit-A and Skol-Patrol (a funk band exclusively dedicated to cop-show themes, both covered and original, featuring Michael Manring). He also recorded two albums with Attention Deficit, a 3-piece featuring Tim Alexander from Primus as well as Manring. Recently Skolnick relocated to New York City and began devoting all of his energies to jazz, enrolling in the jazz program at The New School. Most recently, he has been touring and recording with the Alex Skolnick Trio, a jazz group known for playing rousing bebop renditions of classic rock and heavy metal tunes.

In the spring of 2005, Skolnick and the rest of the classic Testament lineup reunited for a short European tour (10 Days of May Tour), with some American dates appended on. The tour was successful and a CD/DVD release was put together from the May 8, 2005 London show. The band has continued touring with this lineup and there are plans for a new album.

Alex now usually plays Heritage Guitar electric and hollow-bodied models. In his early years with Testament he endorsed Ibanez guitars and mainly played the 540 PII model. Contrary to popular belief, the 540 PII was not his signature model.

Alex currently tours with the East Coast set of the Trans-Siberian Orchestra in the winter months alongside Chris Caffery.

“The Formation of Damnation” the first studio album of all new material with Testament in nine years to feature Alex on guitar since 1992’s The Ritual is set to be released on April 29, 2008. The first single “More Than Meets the Eye” can be heard on the band’s official Myspace page.

Marc: How does it feel to be back on tour with the band, take me through the idea came about and what your initial thoughts were?

Alex: Well it was timing, really good timing.  We’ve been friends for a while so we kept in touch.  The guys in the band would sometimes come to my jazz shows and we talked about doing guest appearances.  I got to the point where I felt very good about my jazz playing and that my trio was successful so I was curious after being away from metal for some time.  I would have ended up doing a metal project again but the guys in Testament seem to be ready to do a new record and we took our time doing it this time.

Marc:  have you seen an increase in younger fans in addition to the old hard core fans.

Alex: Absolutely and it has been great.  There seems to be a lot of teens and twenty something year olds I’ve noticed at the show.  I didn’t want to do a nostalgic or tribute type record.  I wanted this to be fresh and part of that is because we have Paul in the band now.  It feels current and fresh.

Marc:  After live in London was it the intention to put something out that sounded like a typical testament record or something completely different for the new record?

Alex: Well originally we had Nick Barker playing with us for a while on drums and he didn’t work out for various reasons.  He introduced the black metal element which Eric was getting into.  With Paul though he comes from out genre and it feel right and it took us in the direction where we liked how it sounded.  People are saying that it covers the scope of the history of the band.  It wasn’t on purpose but it worked out.

Marc: After you parted ways with the band what were your opinion on some of the records that you weren’t on?

Alex: It’s hard to say, I don’t want to seem like I didn’t like them because I wasn’t there but I think it real took a while.  There were good moments on all those records but it took a while because the ever changing lineup and it was hard for them to get some chemistry. After that Chuck got sick and he had business to take care of and get better and the whole future of the band was questionable.  Once Chuck got better we weren’t ready to let it go and that’s when we talked about getting together.  I had to think about it and I was in a place were I felt I developed and I could play with piano players and string instruments.  There so much more to music than metal and I think when you are in it some people in music lose site of that.  By the time they talked to me about rejoining I was living my dream and I felt good enough to hang with my favorite player.  I felt it would be interesting to step back in and see what would happen with everything that I have learned and applied it to the new record.

Marc: Out of the previous record which one are you most proud of and that you had the most fun recording?

Alex: I think Practice what you Preach was the one that had the most energy.  We started to get an identity and it was different.  It really put us on the maop as far as us having are more original sound.  I also started getting noticed and I was the guy who could play in the thrash band.  I started getting write ups with people like Vernon Reid or Nuno Bettencourt.
Marc: I remember a magazine that you and Marty Friedman on the cover.

Alex: yes, Skolnick and Friedman, sounds like a law firm.

Marc: With regards to gear I know you are using heritage now.  What is the difference and which guitars do you like the best?

Alex: heritages are the same quality as the classic Gibson’s and they’re beefy.  It’s honestly the best guitar I’ve ever played.  They make amazing Jazz instruments and they are the original Gibson plant.  Gibson is this mass assembly line system but most of the ones you get now are assembly line made.  The heritages are hand crafted.  They approached me because they noticed all the press I was receiving and I thought that was great.  I turned down endorsements from many other companies and Heritage was a small company that I really liked.

Marc: Are you disappointed that Louie is not on this reunion record?

Alex: I’m a little bit guilty about not being disappointed.  We love Lou because he’s a brother but the reality was that the band got to the point where we needed drumming on the level with modern metal.  It was no fault of his own but for him to come back he would have had to really change his life.  We’re still brothers but he’s happy with what he’s doing and he still comes to the shows.

Iron Man Rockets to $201M worldwide! / Marvel Studios Sets Four More Release Dates! / MK Review

ironman.jpg

ComingSoon.net has posted the impressive box office estimates for Iron Man, which follow below:

Paramount Pictures and Marvel Studios’ Iron Man exceeded all expectations, earning a massive $100.75 million during its opening weekend domestically from 4,105 theaters and $104.2 million since debuting Thursday night, averaging $24,543 per site. Internationally, the film has also earned an incredible $96.7 million in 57 countries since it began opening Wednesday, putting its worldwide total at $201 million after just five days! The comic book adaptation, directed by Jon Favreau and starring Robert Downey Jr., Gwyneth Paltrow, Terrence Howard and Jeff Bridges, was the 10th biggest opening of all-time and the fourth biggest for a superhero movie. Among nonsequels, it came in behind only the first Spider-Man, which opened with $114.8 million. As far as May openings, Iron Man came in at #8, just behind X-Men: The Last Stand’s $102.8 million when you look at the three-day figure (not counting Thursday night). Financed by Marvel Studios and distributed by Paramount, the movie cost about $150 million to make and $75 million to market.

Marvel Entertainment released their first quarter report to its shareholders this morning to coincide with the announcement about the success this past weekend of Marvel Studios’ first production Iron Man, which grossed an estimated $104.2 million domestically and over $201 million worldwide. The announcement included an update of Marvel Studios’ feature film slate with the already-rumored Iron Man 2 announced for a release on April 30, 2010, followed by three more movies for the summers of ‘10 and ‘11. Matthew Vaughn’s Thor is set for a release on June 4, 2010, and The First Avenger: Captain America (the working title) will kick off the summer of 2011 on May 6, followed by the highly-anticipated and foreshadowed The Avengers scheduled for July 2011. (Edgar Wright’s Ant-Man is also listed as being in development with no release date set.)

With that in mind, one can start expecting a lot more announcements in the coming months about creative teams and casting for those movies including who might direct the Captain America and Avengers movies. (Whomever plays Steve Rogers AKA Captain America presumably will be making two movies at once.)
“Reasons why IRON MAN is the most perfect film adaptation of
a comic EVER” by Robot Arm

~ Movie was in NO way, shape or form created for children or teens.

~ With that, there were no over-abundance of characters or super-villains, as is normally the case, for the purpose excessive toy marketing. All they had was Iron Monger. Any other director would have had Stark fighting robot vultures, and robot dinosaurs, and Sand Man and Nazis.

~ Because of the small cast, there was great character development and lots human interaction which took precedence to the action … which I love.

~ That’s because of the GREAT writing! It remained loyal to the comic characters and history, for all us nerds. Yet, the film was so relevant to current issues, and the characters (especially Stark) were so likable and perfectly cast, that anyone would love it.

~ The action was superbly choreographed. And everything looked REAL!! Any other director would have totally computer animated Stark every time he donned the Iron Man armor–which I HATE. But Robert Downey wore real armor! And there was a ton of live action. And whatever action sequences did use CGI were absolutely flawless!

~ Also, it was one of the first comic movies that didn’t rely heavily on a modern, pop soundtrack. The music took a backseat to the drama, thank christ. Again, the Director was not worrying about marketing a soundtrack toward a teenage audience.
(How about Tony Stark working to Suicidal Tendencies first album? WTF!!)

I had more thoughts, but I can’t even relay them all to you right now. I LOVED it. It’s right up there with Spider Man 2.

Oh and, right at that part near the end, when that agent who helped Pepper said he was from S.H.I.E.L.D. … I figured out what the secret ending was that you were keeping from me. I KNEW right then and there that they were going to show Samuel L. Jackson as Nick Fury. I think because of the fact that they cast him as a black guy in that Avengers cartoon that I never saw … and plus, I think I remember you and I having a discussion a couple years ago about hearing something about SLJ playing Fury in SOME movie.

What a bunch of bullshit.

You know, I’ve never seen Daredevil, and never will … but I can understand casting Kingpin as a big black dude. But not fucking Nick Fury! He is THEE Cool, White-Guy Icon. He belongs to US!

They’re probably going to ruin the franchise with a sequel anyway … introduction of the AVENGERS? Too many characters.

What they need to do with the sequel, is have Stark’s ego get the best of him, he starts drinking himself to death, he hands over the Iron Man armor to his black soldier friend, played by Terrence Howard, the black dude gets too power hungry and becomes a dangerous megalomaniac, and then Stark pull his shit together, builds new armor, and slaps the fuck out of ‘Howard’.

But, with the Avengers in the sequel, there could be the possibility of my hero “The Vision” coming into the film …

ooh, or ULTRON!!
Yeah!
