ComingSoon.net has posted the impressive box office estimates for Iron Man, which follow below:
Paramount Pictures and Marvel Studios’ Iron Man exceeded all expectations, earning a massive $100.75 million during its opening weekend domestically from 4,105 theaters and $104.2 million since debuting Thursday night, averaging $24,543 per site. Internationally, the film has also earned an incredible $96.7 million in 57 countries since it began opening Wednesday, putting its worldwide total at $201 million after just five days! The comic book adaptation, directed by Jon Favreau and starring Robert Downey Jr., Gwyneth Paltrow, Terrence Howard and Jeff Bridges, was the 10th biggest opening of all-time and the fourth biggest for a superhero movie. Among nonsequels, it came in behind only the first Spider-Man, which opened with $114.8 million. As far as May openings, Iron Man came in at #8, just behind X-Men: The Last Stand’s $102.8 million when you look at the three-day figure (not counting Thursday night). Financed by Marvel Studios and distributed by Paramount, the movie cost about $150 million to make and $75 million to market.
Marvel Entertainment released their first quarter report to its shareholders this morning to coincide with the announcement about the success this past weekend of Marvel Studios’ first production Iron Man, which grossed an estimated $104.2 million domestically and over $201 million worldwide. The announcement included an update of Marvel Studios’ feature film slate with the already-rumored Iron Man 2 announced for a release on April 30, 2010, followed by three more movies for the summers of ‘10 and ‘11. Matthew Vaughn’s Thor is set for a release on June 4, 2010, and The First Avenger: Captain America (the working title) will kick off the summer of 2011 on May 6, followed by the highly-anticipated and foreshadowed The Avengers scheduled for July 2011. (Edgar Wright’s Ant-Man is also listed as being in development with no release date set.)
With that in mind, one can start expecting a lot more announcements in the coming months about creative teams and casting for those movies including who might direct the Captain America and Avengers movies. (Whomever plays Steve Rogers AKA Captain America presumably will be making two movies at once.)
“Reasons why IRON MAN is the most perfect film adaptation of
a comic EVER” by Robot Arm
~ Movie was in NO way, shape or form created for children or teens.
~ With that, there were no over-abundance of characters or super-villains, as is normally the case, for the purpose excessive toy marketing. All they had was Iron Monger. Any other director would have had Stark fighting robot vultures, and robot dinosaurs, and Sand Man and Nazis.
~ Because of the small cast, there was great character development and lots human interaction which took precedence to the action … which I love.
~ That’s because of the GREAT writing! It remained loyal to the comic characters and history, for all us nerds. Yet, the film was so relevant to current issues, and the characters (especially Stark) were so likable and perfectly cast, that anyone would love it.
~ The action was superbly choreographed. And everything looked REAL!! Any other director would have totally computer animated Stark every time he donned the Iron Man armor–which I HATE. But Robert Downey wore real armor! And there was a ton of live action. And whatever action sequences did use CGI were absolutely flawless!
~ Also, it was one of the first comic movies that didn’t rely heavily on a modern, pop soundtrack. The music took a backseat to the drama, thank christ. Again, the Director was not worrying about marketing a soundtrack toward a teenage audience.
(How about Tony Stark working to Suicidal Tendencies first album? WTF!!)
I had more thoughts, but I can’t even relay them all to you right now. I LOVED it. It’s right up there with Spider Man 2.
Oh and, right at that part near the end, when that agent who helped Pepper said he was from S.H.I.E.L.D. … I figured out what the secret ending was that you were keeping from me. I KNEW right then and there that they were going to show Samuel L. Jackson as Nick Fury. I think because of the fact that they cast him as a black guy in that Avengers cartoon that I never saw … and plus, I think I remember you and I having a discussion a couple years ago about hearing something about SLJ playing Fury in SOME movie.
What a bunch of bullshit.
You know, I’ve never seen Daredevil, and never will … but I can understand casting Kingpin as a big black dude. But not fucking Nick Fury! He is THEE Cool, White-Guy Icon. He belongs to US!
They’re probably going to ruin the franchise with a sequel anyway … introduction of the AVENGERS? Too many characters.
What they need to do with the sequel, is have Stark’s ego get the best of him, he starts drinking himself to death, he hands over the Iron Man armor to his black soldier friend, played by Terrence Howard, the black dude gets too power hungry and becomes a dangerous megalomaniac, and then Stark pull his shit together, builds new armor, and slaps the fuck out of ‘Howard’.
But, with the Avengers in the sequel, there could be the possibility of my hero “The Vision” coming into the film …
ooh, or ULTRON!!
Yeah!
